At Kuuwa Rentals, we are continuing to invest in low-emission fleet solutions through our Charge Forward program.

Our latest addition is a set of hybrid electric buses, built to support workforce transport across regional and remote Western Australia without compromising on range, reliability, comfort or emissions performance.

These buses are a practical next step for clients looking to reduce their environmental impact without needing to invest in costly charging infrastructure.

What is a Self-Charging Hybrid Electric Vehicle?

Although these are categorised as Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), they are better described as self-charging electric vehicles. This means they do not need to be plugged in. Instead, they use an integrated energy recovery system to charge the battery while driving, making them an ideal option for long-range regional transport where charging stations are limited.

This makes them an excellent choice for mining, construction, and regional workforce transport projects, where reducing emissions is a priority but plug-in EV infrastructure is not practical.

Hybrid Electric Buses

Key Features and Benefits

• No plug-in charging required

The buses recharge themselves using regenerative braking technology, meaning no additional charging equipment or site modifications are needed.

• Euro 6 emissions compliance

Even when operating solely on diesel, the buses meet the latest and strictest Euro 6 emissions standards, with an expected range of over 2,100 kilometres

• Smart braking for better efficiency

The braking system uses Scania’s integrated regeneration method. It is not a traditional retarder system like those found in trucks, but instead uses electric motors to slow the bus and recharge the battery at the same time.

• Advanced safety features

Equipped with blind spot monitoring, the system alerts drivers to surrounding vehicles using a visual warning on the A-pillar and a vibrating seat alert to help prevent lane-change collisions.

• Driver-first comfort design

The driver’s area includes independent air conditioning controls and multiple vent placements for a more balanced and comfortable airflow. This is a step up from traditional top-only vent systems.

• Passenger-ready features

Each bus includes a front-mounted TV, allowing for playback of training videos or shift pre-starts while transporting workers to site.

• User-friendly interface

The Irizar driver control panel is intuitive and customisable. Settings such as ignition-linked functions and lighting configurations can be easily programmed to suit operational needs.

Part of Kuuwa’s Charge Forward Commitment

This new fleet addition is part of our Charge Forward initiative, focused on delivering sustainable, fit-for-purpose transport solutions for clients across Western Australia. As pressure grows to reduce emissions, our hybrid fleet provides a smart alternative to traditional diesel vehicles, without the logistical hurdles of full electrification.

Whether you are transporting teams across mine sites, between regional locations or to and from camp, these hybrid buses are a flexible, lower-emission option that helps meet environmental goals without operational compromise.
