With the Race to Zero already underway, Kuuwa Rentals and Worley have joined forces. Together they have completed the first of its kind feasibility study that sees Australian mines swapping out their fleet with the cleanest, safest and most economical solutions in line with their own 2030 targets.

The program, Charge Forward, will offer the industry a comprehensive turn-key solution. With 100,000 light vehicles currently on sites across Australia, each with an average life span of 4.5 years the industry will be looking to change over 20,000 a year to meet targets.

“This is a major milestone in our journey to decarbonise the mining industry,” said Wes Chapman, Managing Director of Kuuwa. “The study shows that mine electrification is a viable and cost-effective way to reduce emissions, and we are excited to work with Worley and the mining industry to make it a reality as part of the Charge Forward program.”

The initiative will look to ease the transition to electric light vehicles to begin with, but work has already started on truck, bus and plant options.

“This study is a game-changer for the mining industry,” said Paul Lucey, Principal Mine Electrification & Technology at Worley. “It shows that mine electrification is not only possible, but it is also the best way to reduce emissions and save money, especially as part of the Charge Forward program.”

Key findings:

  • A number of Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) solutions suitable for the rugged mine site environment.
  • A comprehensive process flow that not only delivers a BEV but the necessary supporting infrastructure.
  • A complete governance framework to protect and advise all parties.
  • A suitable operating model to support the mining industry through this transitional period.
